Computer and Internet monitoring software set filters by identifying page content or dangerous sites in several different ways.
- Keyword filtering. Computer and Internet monitoring software scans web pages for keywords as they are sent. Any page containing any of those words is blocked from loading in the browser.
- Heuristic keyword filtering. Heuristic filtering ranks word combinations to determine context, so that breast cancer is treated differently than breast alone by the computer and Internet monitoring software.
- Blacklisting. Computer and Internet monitoring software uses lists of dangerous IP addresses or domains to block access.
- Protocol blocking. Computer and Internet monitoring software blocks all traffic for Instant messaging, peer-to-peer, and other protocols to stop dangerous file transfers or malware uploads.
These methods have varying degrees of effectiveness. The main problems are that they are incomplete; require constant computer and Internet monitoring software upgrades or modifications to stay current; routinely misidentify page content; and can even increase CPU load on |

servers. They also lack flexibility in implementing Internet monitoring. For example, blacklisting IP addresses blocks every site hosted on those IP addresses, regardless of content. Blocking “offensive” keywords leaves defining content vulnerable to the bias of a third-party reviewer, so blocked content varies greatly between different kinds of computer and Internet monitoring software.
iPrism’s computer and Internet monitoring software takes a different approach by using categories to configure Internet monitoring. iPrism filtering is flexibly configured with more accuracy in what is filtered by combining the best aspects of computer and Internet monitoring software, such as URL databases, time-based user profiles, and keyword filtering:
- Kernel-level filtering monitors every packet of traffic. iPrism computer and Internet monitoring software filters major protocols for web browsing, instant messaging, and other networking actions.
- The iGuard database is a comprehensive database of URLs, classified into one of 63 categories according to keywords, images, and content. Every page in the iGuard database is human-reviewed for accuracy. iGuard filters only by URLs, not by whole sites or IP addresses; even if one page of a site is blocked, the rest of the site is still accessible.
- Computer and Internet monitoring software profiles set what categories are used to determine Internet monitoring, so filtering is user-defined. Human bias can’t affect the information that reaches your employees. This improves productivity, since time-consuming, but inoffensive, content can be blocked by computer and Internet monitoring software. Profiles include time ranges when access is allowed and enforce safe searching.
